Can an air source heat pump be used for heating and cooling at the same time?
No, an air source heat pump cannot be used for heating and cooling simultaneously.
While air source heat pumps are versatile and can provide both heating and cooling, they function by reversing their flow direction to achieve these different modes. When in heating mode, they extract heat from the outside air and transfer it indoors. In cooling mode, they remove heat from indoors and release it outside.
To switch between heating and cooling, the heat pump's internal valves must be adjusted. This process typically takes a few minutes and cannot be done instantaneously. Therefore, it's impossible to use an air source heat pump for both heating and cooling at the same time.
